Nonfiction Reading Workshops - Dena Statum, John S. Jones

Children must learn to read nonfiction differently than fiction. Mini-lessons help children to understand that they must slow down when reading nonfiction, and they learn the importance of reading and understanding the features of nonfiction text. Also, the children read nonfiction text with pencil or highlighter in hand while using sticky notes, charts, or graphic organizers to help keep track of their reading. Mini-lessons also focus on knowing the difference between important details and interesting facts.
